Getting started with Budgets

Envelope budgeting, bills and subscriptions, importing your transactions, and how Budgets is encrypted.

Updated 2026-09-28

Budgets uses envelope budgeting: every dollar of income is given a job, month by month, and overspending in one category is covered by moving money from another. It works well for manual entry rather than automatic bank tracking.

The budget screen

Categories are grouped (Groceries, Rent, Fun money and so on); each shows what's assigned, what's been spent and what's left. Accounts have a simple register you can add transactions to directly.

Bills and subscriptions

Track a bill or a subscription alongside your budget: a due date, an amount, and an optional link to its login in your Vault. Set a "remind me N days before" date and it's shown in Budgets — it doesn't (yet) send a notification or email on its own, so it's on you to check before a free trial turns into a charge.

Bringing your data in

Budgets doesn't connect to your bank. Instead, import transactions from a CSV file (with a column-mapping wizard) or an OFX/QFX/QBO file most banks can export. Files are parsed on your device and never uploaded.

Taking your data out

Budget settings → Export CSV (also in the sidebar) downloads three spreadsheets for the open budget: transactions (date, account, payee, category, amount, currency, memo, cleared state; split transactions get one row per split), a category summary by month (assigned, activity, available), and bills and subscriptions. Amounts are plain numbers with a minus sign for money going out. The files are made in your browser. Settings → Data → Export everything downloads the same files for every budget you have, and it also works while a suspended account is exporting its data.

Reports

See spending by category or payee, income versus expenses, and how your net worth changes over time.

Sharing

Family and Business plans can share a budget with the household or team, so everyone sees the same numbers.

Encryption

Accounts, categories, transactions and notes are end-to-end encrypted on your device before upload. Nothing is shared with a bank or a data aggregator — Budgets has no bank connection to misuse.
